The engine has a cylinder block (10) with a piston (11) reciprocating in each cylinder. Each piston comes close to the underside of the cylinder head (1) at top dead centre leaving no dead space. One half (2') of a combustion chamber is formed in the side of the cylinder head and communicates with the cylinder through a passage (7). The other half (2") of the combustion chamber is formed in a side piece (6) which is bolted to the side of the cylinder head. This side piece has a tapped hole for a fuel injector (3), and a second tapped hole for a sparking plug.
