Deodorising gases contg. CO2 in two or more stages consists of washing with water contg. free chlorine and having a high pH value. The chlorine used is (practically) free of chlorine dioxide, and in at least one stage, the wash liquor contains >=0.02 g/1 of active chlorine. The pH value of the wash liquor is between 4 and 9 in the first stage, and between 7 and 11 in the second stage, whilst the pH value in the second stage is maintained at a value of 0.3 go 4.0 greater than that in the first stage. An active alkali is added at the second stage in an amt. which corresponds approx. stoichiometrically with the total amt. of active chlorine added. Efficient removal of odour-intensive compounds from the gas is achieved using inexpensive additive chemicals (i.e. without using chlorine dioxide, potassium permanganate etc.). The quantity of water required is small and efficient operation at comparatively high water temps. (up to 38 degrees C) can be achieved. The additive chemicals are efficiently utilised
