Electro-chemical machining of circumferential grooves in bores - uses electrode with hard metal cap to remove burrs

The workpiece(17) with a relatively small dia. bore(19) has a circumferential groove(24) cut by electrochemical machining. The electrode (1) has an insulating sleeve(11) with a central circumferential groove(12) and a cap(8) of hard metal which fits on a reduced dia.(9). Flats(13, 14) on opposite sides of the sleeve(11) allow the electrolyte to flow from the reservoir(16) through the groove(12) and cut the groove(24) in the workpiece(17). The hard metal cap(8) has teeth(15) so that it acts like a broach and removes any burrs due to cross-drillings when it is pushed through the bore(19). At the same time it centres the workpiece(17) in the holder(4).
