[Also in Division H2] A method of rapidly charging an electric battery-such as a sealed nickel-cadmium battery-comprises the steps of charging the battery at a high rate until the battery condition reaches a predetermined value, disconnecting the battery from the charging supply and connecting it to a load and then discharging the battery through the load at a high rate for a short time. The battery condition may be the terminal voltage of the battery during charging, the internal pressure or the temperature of the battery, these three conditions being interrelated and, if desired, these conditions may be made dependent upon ambient temperature. The charging process may be terminated by means responsive to the battery terminal voltage, the average current flow during discharging at the energy values during charging and discharging. A battery 11 is charged from a source 10 of direct current by way of a switch 12, current regulator 13 and a battery condition dependent switch 14. A sensor 15, compensated for ambient temperature by a sensor 16, senses the voltage of the battery during charging and, when a predetermined terminal voltage is reached, operates switch 14 to remove the battery 11 from the charging source 10 and connects the battery to a load 18 by way of a switch 17 whereupon the battery discharges through the load. At a given battery voltage during discharge the sensor 15 causes switches 14, 17 to revert to normal and the charging cycle is repeated. Alternatively the sensor 15 may sense the other battery conditions mentioned above. The charging operation may be ended by operation of the switch 12 either by a time mechanism 19, a load current sensor 20 or a load voltage sensor 21 compensated for ambient temperature by a sensor 22. The control circuit of the elements 14, 15, 17 includes Zener diodes, a thyristor and electromagnetically-operated relays together with an RC timing network. |
