The chair is provided with a seat (1) which is drawn up at the back to adapt to body shape which runs into the back rest multi-sectional (2) wherein at least two sections (3, 4) or (7, 8) of the back rest are connected together by an articulated joint (12, 15) which has as the axis of articulation at least one horizontal transverse axis (13, 16) which lies in the area of the back rest approximately level with the point where the two associated sections abut each other. With this type of back rest the pelvis always remains firmly supported although the position of the back can be adjusted as required. A joint (12) is provided between the forwardly inclined pelvis section (3) of the back rest (2) and the lumbar vertebra section (4).
