Steel bottles used for storing high pressure gases such as acetylene have identification marks and other data stamped on the upper end of the bottle. After years of use this information becomes illegible due to accumulation of dirt so that the surface must be cleaned. The bottle is mounted vertically in a cradle which is swung to the horizontal position by the pneumatic jack and the end pulled inside the hood. The pipe directs a stream of air containing sand or other abrasive material over the end of the bottle which is simultaneously rotated about its horizontal axis by the motor driving the rollers.
