A heavy resin, opt. having functional gps. which are attached to convert the resin to an ion-exchange resin, has a polymeric structure which comprises substd. benzene gps and has Br and/or I gps. included in the structure. The resin (further treated if necessary) it an increased specific. wt. without appreciably affecting its porosity or permeability. Thus high density liquids (e.g. contg. solids in suspension) can be passed through a column or bed of the resin with minimum displacement of the resin and with max. contact with it. In quoted examples, the efficiency of the resin is tested by its ability to adsorb uranium. Pref. the resin is divinyl benzene-crosslinked polystyrene which is aminated pref. with pyridine or trimethylamine. It is pref. rendered ion-exchanging via chloromethylation, and is pref. aminated after chloromethylation and bromination or iodation. |
