<p>A covering to be placed directly on exposed or elevated ground, partic. to receive cultures in pots or containers placed on it, is made of thin woven strips or round filaments of an appropriate plastic material. The cover pref. contains 60 filaments per 10 cm2 in both warp and weft, and strips 2-3 mm wide. The plastic is pref. polypropylene contg. carbon black. The filaments can be obtd. by extrusion or by twisting of flat strips. The cover is partic. used in soilless culture, e.g. in nurseries and flower growing, instead of polyethylene film. It can also be used in soil culture without pots or containers, being placed on the ground between plants to hinder weed growth. The covering permits free two-way passage of water and air, and prevents passage of ultra-violet and infra-red radiation, thus hindering weed growth. It has high strength and is of low cost. Being permeable, it prevents the retention of stagnant water between the pots or containers, and hence a better regulation of watering is achieved.</p> |
