<p>An internal combustion engine (10) is coupled through a clutch (12) to an electric motor (11). The motor shaft is double ended, and at the end opposite the engine, it is connected by a clutch (13) to the compressor (14) of a refrigerator or heat pump. Under normal conditions the compressor is driven by the engine. The electric motor is not energised and serves merely as a connecting shaft. If there is a breakdown on the engine, the electric motor is connected to the supply and used to drive the compressor.</p>
