In this data memory, first data words allocated to the characters to be displayed on the screen and second data words allocated to the field control characters defining the fields on the screen are stored. The memory capacity required for this is reduced in that the data memory contains a character store (ZS) and a field store (FS). The first data words (DZ) are stored in the character store (ZS) and the second data words (DF) are stored in the field store (FS). The content of the character store (ZS) is addressed with the aid of a first address register and the content of the field store (FS) is addressed with the aid of a second address register.
