An appts. for emulsifying a mixt. of water, emulsifying agent and air, in which the emulsification is accompanied by a large increase in vol., comprises a pipe, an air suction propeller, an atomiser and a motor. One end of the pipe constitutes the air inlet. The other end is wider and constitutes the emulsion outlet. The atomiser rotated downstream of the propeller. The motor is a hydraulic motor driven by the entering water under press, and drives the propeller and the atomiser. Emulsifying agent is drawn in by the entering water through a venturi. Used in fire-fighting, partic. in the case of hydrocarbon fires, in which foam is used to envelope the site and deprive it of oxygen. Increases in vol. of the order of 1000 l. of foam from 1 l. of a mixt. of water and emulsifier are obtd.
