1483717 Laminating thermoplastic materials; seaming non-metallic sheet material STANLEY WONG 24 Feb 1976 [29 Jan 1976] 03577/76 Headings B5N and B5K A thermoplastic design lamina 19 is bonded to a base thermoplastic lamina 22 by placing the design lamina over a die 12 of heat-conductive material, having the outline shape of the design and surrounded by and slightly spaced from a surround member 14; placing the laminae, die and surrounding member in a press; and heat-bonding the two laminae in the press so that a portion of the base lamina flows into the space 21 between the die and the surround member. As shown, an aluminium alloy platen 11 supports a hollow brass die 12, having flat edges 17 and being filled with resilient material 24, e.g. rubber, and a spring mounted acrylic surrounding platen 13, which at its furthest location provides, with the die, a cavity for a p.v.c. design lamina 19. The lamina 19 is bonded to a vinyl base lamina 22 by placing the assembly between the jaws 25 of an electrically heated press. The gap 21 enables the formation of a ridge 32 in the final product, whilst the use of the resilient material 24 produces a graduation in the thickness of the lamina 19, edge portions 31 corresponding to the edges 17. |
