An apparatus and a method for controlling a channel of an image display device are provided to constitute themes specialized according to users by setting themes according to channels. When a user inputs a power-on command, the user is authenticated. If the user is authenticated, grade information of the user is stored(S102). It is determined whether the user enters a theme setting mode in the currently received channel(S103). If the user enters the theme setting mode, the theme set by the user is included in previously stored channels(S104). Theme registration according to channels or channel application according to channels is controlled according to the determined result.
