A purlin for roof tarpaulins of tents, in particular marquees, has a bearing surface (10) for the roof tarpaulins with a collecting channel (5, 6) for condensation. On its lower wall (19), located opposite the bearing surface (17), the purlin (1) has a securing means which is in the form of a slotted tube and is intended for fastening a tarpaulin which forms a side wall of the tent. Furthermore, the purlin (1) has a plane of symmetry which runs parallel to its side walls (3, 4). This purlin can thus be arranged both perpendicularly to the fall line of a roof surface, beneath the roof skin, and as a girder or beam or on both sides of the roof ridge, for fastening the side walls of the tent. Since only this one type of purlin is necessary to erect tents, stock-keeping and mounting of the purlin are considerably simplified and shortened, since different purlins do not have to be specially stored, kept available and arranged at a specific location. <IMAGE>
