Unsaturated opt. halogenated polyester resins, which are stable but hardenable on addition of a radical catalyst, are prepd. from na) alpha,beta-unsaturated dicarboxylic acids together with an aromatic, aliphatic and/or cycloaliphatic acid, aliphatic diol and styrene or a styrene deriv. or b) alpha,beta-unsaturated dicarboxylic acids and cycloaliphatic and/or aromatic diols opt. with aliphatic diols and styrene or a styrene deriv. Resins also contain a biocide of formula (I) R1R2R3SnX (I) (where R1R2 and R3 = 1-8C alkyl (opt. unsatd.) or an aromatic gp. and, in (a) above, when X = Cl, F or OH they may also represent an aromatic carboxylic acid residue or a gp. (II) R1R2R3Sn - Y - (II) (where Y = dicarboxylic aromatic acid; and in (b) above X may be as indicated for (a) or any aliphatic carboxylic acid gp. which may be unsaturated, Y is as indicated above or is an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid which may be unsaturated. The biocide constitutes 0.1-30% of the weight of the polyester resin. Typical cpd. is tributyl tin chloride.
