1491093 Petroleum resins SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 8 Jan 1975 [8 Jan 1974] 741/75 Heading C3P [Also in Division B2] Petroleum resins are prepared by polymerizing in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst a C 5 cracked naphtha or gas oil fraction in which the weight ratios of acyclic diolefins to monoolefins and of cyclic diolefins to monoolefins have been adjusted to from 0À40 : 1 to 0À70 : 1 and from 0À07 : 1 to 0À35 : 1 respectively and in which the cyclic diolefin component comprises cyclopentadiene, dicyclopentadiene or a codimer of cyclopentadiene and an acylic diolefin. The ratios may be adjusted by fractional, extractive or azeotropic distillation, removal of diolefins by thermal dimerization or by addition of C 4 and/or C 5 fractions from which diolefins have been removed. The catalyst may be a boron or aluminium halide or complex thereof with an aromatic compound and optionally a hydrogen halide, and the polymerization may be effected batchwise or continuously, optionally in the presence of a hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon solvent. The products may be used in the manufacture of pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes. |
