In a friction clutch having conical engaging surfaces 26, 30 on driving and driven members 10, 28 respectively the actuation of the movable member 28 for both engagement and disengagement is effected through a snap-over conical spring disc 34. This disc is loosely anchored at its inner periphery in an annular groove of a collar 36 secured to the driven member 16 on which clutch member 28 is slidable. On its outer periphery the disc is engaged by an actuating cover member. 46 with an axiallyextending operating knob 48 thereon which may be rotatably mounted. The cover 46 has an annulus 50 secured thereto to form a groove for the outer periphery of the annulus and to provide a flange 60 for engaging a flange 58 on the member 28 to retract it on disengagement. Intermediate its peripheries the disc 34 engages. an annular rib 42 of the clutch member 28. When the knob 48 is pulled to the right the disc 34 is snapped over as shown to hold the clutch disengaged. On movement to the left the knob snaps the disc over centre to engage the clutch and hold it engaged under the tension thereof.
