1314573 Assemblies of glass fibres MEMOREX CORP 24 April 1970 [14 July 1969] 19821/70 Heading C1M [Also in Division G2] Apparatus for pro-assembling each complete line of optical fibres 24 in a computer output information display 26, Fig. 4 (see Division G2) comprises a central frame 72 having an entry slot 74 for holding the fibres in a flat line, combs 76, 80 containing a number of slots 78 equal to the number of fibres (twenty) in one line of a set 0-32 in the display (Fig. 4), and fibre turn around stations 84, 86. A continuous strand of fibre optic material is passed in turn through slot 74, through one of the slots 78 in comb 76, around one of the pins 82 in station 86, back through a different slot 78 in comb 76, through slot 74, back through a slot in comb 80, around 84, through a different slot in comb 80 and back through slot 74 to continue the process until a full line of fibre has been woven (when there will be 33 fibres in each of the twenty slots 78). Spacers 88, Fig. 9 (not shown) may be placed between each fibre group (of five fibres, Fig. 5), the fibres and their spacers being moved in frame 72 by small conveyer belts (90). The fibres are then cemented together in a central slot 92 in frame 72 by application of epoxy resin cured by a pair of heated platens (94), the ends 76, 80 being similarly treated. The assembly is then removed from the frame 72 and cut in half to provide two lines of fibres for assembly in the display, the fibre bundles between 76, 86 and 80, 84 also being cut and the spacers being removed; the fibre ends 80, 76 are fitted to twenty light emitting diodes and the ends 72 are fitted in a display bank (see Division G2). The procedure is then repeated for the remaining lines of the display. |
