The mechanism loads and shreds or compresses material into a hopper, particularly for a rubbish, having a thrust plate driving the material in the lengthwise direction and ejecting it. The plate itself (13) is equipped with a mechanism (26, 27) for shredding and/or compressing the material, and also if necessary for transporting it. The plate can also form the loading funnel (16), whose opening (20) is shielded from the inside of the hopper. The opening can be at the top and the shredding and compressing mechanism at the bottom of the plate.
