摘要 1482737 Thermal batteries CATALYST RESEARCH CORP 13 July 1967 32404/67 Heading H1B The useful operating time of a thermal battery which is activated by melting a solid electrolyte by heat derived from a combustible composition, is greatly extended by moving an auxiliary heat source in the form of a radioactive isotope into heat transmitting relationship with the battery so that the battery temperature is maintained after the combustible composition is expended whereby the electrolyte remains molten and the battery continues to provide electricity. As shown, the battery is annular and comprises electrodes 16, 18 spaced by pads 17 impregnated with fuzible electroyte and pads 20 impregnated with a combustible material. The pads 20 are connected by combustible strips 21 and are ignited by a device 38 connected by leads 40, 42 to a firing circuit 34, 36. A tube 4 extending through the battery housing 2 has an extension receiving a capsule 27 containing a radio-active isotope 28, e.g. Sr<SP>90</SP>TiO 4 . This capsule is retained against the action of a spring 32 by a fusible wire 29 extending through a hook 30 and connected by leads 46, 48 to the circuit 34, 36. Thus simultaneously with the action of the igniter 38 the wire 29 burns to release the capsule 27 and the heat generated by the isotope is transmitted to the battery.
