Desalting saline solns. - by electrolysing the soln. and removing purified water from the inter-electrode zone

The process comprises zonal de-salting using DC electrolysis to cause ion migration and suctioning off the low-salt water in the zone between the cathode and the anode. The process is used for the improvement/prodn. of drinking water. The process can be made continuous and produces useful by prods. (Cl, HCl, NaOH, H2). Sea-water can be purified to 0.6% salts in one step and the salt content further reduced in a second treatment.
