<p>The liquid crystal display cell (10) has two opposing glass plates (14, 15), each carrying a transparent conductor layer (16, 17) on its inner face, with nematic crystal material (19) between them. The two facing surfaces of the glass plates (14, 15) have grooves or lines providing two uni-directional surfaces at 90 degrees to one another. The cell (10) is sandwiched between two polarisers (24, 25) which are also positioned at 90 degrees to one another. Each polariser (24, 25) has its polarisation plane parallel to the uni-directional surface on the inner face of the adjacent glass plate (14, 15). A depolariser (35) is positioned at the front of the display, while a reflector (30) may be positioned at the back. The depolariser (35) may comprise a delay plate providing a delay of a quarter of a wavelength for wavelengths of 560 millimicrons.</p> |
