3,3,0 -octane-1,2,4,5,6,8-hexacarboxylic acid 1,5-anhydride of formula (I) its Na salt (II); and its salts with K, Li, NH2 and 3-6C (hydroxy)alkylamines are novel. The cpds. esp. (II), are used as phosphate substitutes in washing/cleaning compsns. The salts with organic bases esp. diethanolammonium can be used as skin moisturizers in cosmetics.
