1474766 Jointing by forging COLD FASTENERS Inc 10 May 1974 [14 May 1973 13 March 1974] 20681/74 Heading B3H [Also in Division F2] A method of forming a joint between a nut 10 and a sheet metal plate 21, the nut comprising a tubular body having a first tubular portion defining a riveting skirt, a second tubular portion having external ribs 16 and an internal screw thread, and a flange, comprises (a) bringing the riveting skirt of the nut into engagement with a portion of the plate surrounding an opening therein, (b) pressing the nut into the plate so that the riveting skirt deforms the plate portion into a neck, and the ribs impress themselves into the neck, and (c) turning the riveting skirt outwardly over the free end of the neck. The joint may be formed using the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, which comprises a pressure die 35, and die elements 41, 44. |
