The slide-in cassette player has the drive capstan and the two tape reel hub supports raised relative to the tape cassette for driving the tape, upon insertion of the latter. The player comprises a fixed cover and a sliding plate, the latter carrying the transducer head and sliding relative to the fixed cover between an initial and a working position. The drive elements are maintained in the raised position, while a movable cover attached to the fixed cover is in the working position, the movable cover having fixed projections which selectively cooperate with an arm pivoted to the sliding plate. The drive elements are preferably mounted on the movable cover.
