In this position the total score for the particular group is visible on the slide through window 28. For verification of the score, the simulated colour patterns on the slides visible through windows 29 can be matched with those obtained on the test strip 11. Aerobic and anaerobic bacteria may be tested. In a further embodiment employing 50 tests e.g. systems designed to determine Enterobacteriaceae or species and strains of Lactobacillus, the scores for each group may be represented by letters or numbers derived from a directory or coder, Fig. 8 (not shown). Example, CB 473 9UA GA = Streptococcus. This coder has five slides representing groups and has slot lengths in the ratio 1:2:4:8:16 per group giving 25 test positions.
