A major part of a wax binder is removed from "green" ceramic bodies prior to firing, by placing the body in a layer of a finely comminuted binder-adsorbing material and heating to above the m.pt. of the wax (but below the volatilisation temp.). This is improved by raising the temp. very slowly, at a predetermined rate. Pref. the temp. is increased to the beginning of melting at a rate 6.7 (pref. 3.3) degrees C/hr., and throughout the melting range at a rate 3.3 (pref. 1.7) degrees C /hr. The heating is continued until >=45 (pref. >=65)% of the wax is removed from the body. Ceramic bodies, e.g. linings for steel casting installations, can be produced by the injection-moulding method, even if they have considerable thickness. |
