In a system to purify contaminated air the contaminants are transferred by a scrubbing process into a liq. medium. The process utilises wash water which absorbes the contaminants. It is treated biologically in an aerated activation tank and recycled into the scrubbing process. A blower passes the contaminated air from the inlet through an acid prescrubbing stage and the neutral or basic main scrubbing stage. Nitrogenous contaminants are sepd. from the wash water which is recycled by a pump. The wash water of the main stage is taken through a flow divider to a biofermenter. The biological method reduces the amts of power and of chemicals required to a min.
