Alkylaromatic cpds. of formula: R1R2R3 Ar (in which R1 and R2 may be H; or R1-3 are 6-20C alkyls) are prepd. by alkylating benzene or its homologues with chloroalkanes at 100 degrees C in the presence of a catalyst. In the improvement, vapours of benzene (or its homologue) and a chloroalkane are passed in upward co-current through >=2 zones, the temp. in the bottom zone being 20 degrees C; i gradually increases to reach 100 degrees C in the upper zone; The process can be intensified by introducing into the bottom zone gaseous HCl or N2 in 20-150-fold volume excess w.r.t. the reaction mixt. Alkylbenzenes are produced for use, after sulphonation, in detergent compsns. The productivity w.r.t. the appts. vol. and the catalyst amt. is increased.
|
