An electrical battery powered grass cutter has a housing with a handle and a lower blade mounted to the housing above which the upper cutter blade can pivot to and fro, and having an electric motor with eccentric drive transmission to power the upper cutter blade is constructed with a spring (26) which operates upon a pressure plate on the upper blade (8). The pressure exerted by the spring (26) on the pressure plate ensures that the upper blade (8) and lower blade (6) remain permanently in planar contact.
