A vertical column has top inlets for liq. and for solid, and a series of sieve plates whose mesh size decreases in the downward direction, the largest mesh being at the top. Liq. outlet is at the bottom of the column. Used for the continuous dissolving of solids in liquids. Column is adaptable to a wide range of solids and liquids without effect on performance, and virtually independent of the properties of the liq. In an example, an experimental column 50mm i/d x 600 mm long had three sieve plates with apertures 1.0, 0.5 and 0.3 mm resp. 150gm. of crystalline sugar fed at the top together with water at 13 degrees C produced 1200 gm. of soln. in 2 mins.
