The water meets a perforated plate 5, the anti-turbulence partition which forms one side of the heating area, the other being the heat insulating partition 8. The heating device 6, controlled by a regulating thermostat 7, has a corrugated heating wall to provide a large area of contact. The light phase 9 is removed by a tiltable trough 12 and discharged into tank 15. The heavy phase 11 is picked up by a suction pipe 17 or other means but preferably using suction via a series of suction pipes which are flexible and retractable so that the bottom area may be periodically cleared of sludge. The intermediate phase 10, from which approximately 99% of the foreign material has been removed, passes via a syphon 18 fitted with a float valve 19, to compartment 2 containing an anti-turbulence partition 20. Separation takes place into a light phase 21 whch is removed via trough 24, a heavy phase 23 which collects in sump 27, and intermediate phase 22 which passes via a separating tube 28 to compartment 3 from here it is pumped via a strainer 30 to external treatment devices.
