As shown, the gas and liquid passages are formed in a conduit 17 fabricated by folding and welding a single metal plate, see Fig. 5 (not shown). The device may be used for chlorinating water or paper pulp or in the activated sludge process, in which a plurality of devices 18 are mounted on the conduit 17 which is supplied by a compressor and pump (not depicted) through respective downcomers 36, 37, Fig. 4. The conduit 17 and downcomers may be raised by a winch 61 for maintenance of the aerators 18 after disconnection of the flanges 53, 57.
