N- alpha -Cyanoalkyl compounds of diaminomaleonitrile represented by the formula (I) <IMAGE> (I) wherein R represents a straight or branched chain alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a phenyl group useful for producing dihydropyrazine compounds; iminonitrile compounds of diaminomaleonitrile useful as antimicrobial agents and intermediates, represented by the formula (II) <IMAGE> (II) wherein R is as defined above; and processes for preparing the same.
