Air mixts. contg. Cl2 and hydrogen halides (I) is passed through a liq. absorbent contg. an alcohol, pref. glycerol, at standard temps. Selective absorption of halides (I) allows determination of Cl2 concn. in air in the presence of hydrogen halides, by using Ag2CrO4-impregnated paper as indicator (as described in parent patent). Cpds. (I) are absorbed completely. Cl2 can pass through absorbent down to 10 ppm vol. proportion in air. The reaction prod., (II) of absorbed hydrogen halide and alcohol absorbs no Cl2 and is non-volatile. The alcohol used has low vapour press. and is itself water soluble as well as its mixt. with (II). Both react neutrally and cause no corrosion.
|
