The active medium of a gas laser comprises a mixture of carbon dioxide, nitrogen and hydrogen, the partial pressure of the hydrogen being such that a greater power output is obtained than that produced when the hydrogen is omitted. In a discharge tube having a diameter of 20 to 30 mms. the partial pressures of the gaseous constituents may be 1: 2 to 4: 0À05 to 5, the preferred hydrogen pressure being about 1 mm. Hg. The gas mixture preferably flows through the tube at 5 m./sec., but may be static. In the preferred embodiment D.C. discharge electrodes are provided in inlet and outlet ports at opposite ends of the tube. The optimum partial pressure of hydrogen is stated to be approximately inversely proportional to the diameter of the discharge tube. |
