1279884 Process for degradation of raw grains H N BARHAM and H N BARHAM Jnr 16 July 1969 [26 July 1968] 35815/69 Heading A2Q A process for the degradation of raw grains, in order to provide starch for industrial applications such as the finishing of paper and textiles, sizings, adhesives, or an additive in gypsum wallboard production, or/and to provide a nutritive binder for animal feed pellets; comprises enclosing the raw grains in a pressure container, absorbing at least one gas into the kernel structure of the grains, partially evacuating the container, and thereafter introducing steam into the container until a peak pressure of at least 1.76 Kg per square centimetre gauge is obtained. Preferably the steam is brought up to peak pressure in a period of from six seconds to 2.5 minutes after steam introduction has been initiated and the steam is maintained at peak pressure for a period of from one to five minutes. The gas absorbed into the kernel structure of the grain is preferably sulphur dioxide, hydrogen chloride, ammonia, chlorine, ethylene. ethylene oxide, or mixtures of these, particularly a mixture of sulphur dioxide with ammonia and/or hydrogen chloride. A preferred process comprises subjecting the grain to the gas or gases in the container until at least 0,1 per cent by weight of the gas or gases has been absorbed into its kernel structure and, after partially evacuating the container, subjecting the grain to steam for a time and at a pressure such that the product formed has a reducing sugar value, cold and hot water solubles content, respectively, from about 0.93 to 4.00, 55.95 to 85.15 and 68.54 to 90.86 per cent. |
