PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pharmaceutical composition in unit dosage form for treating pain or inflammation, cardiovascular disease in a patient at risk of developing a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug associated ulcer and for reducing development of dyspepsia associated symptoms.SOLUTION: The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition comprising a core and two or more layers, in which a) the core comprises aspirin or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof; b) a first layer surrounds the core and the layer has a coating that is insoluble in aqueous medium at a pH below 3.5 and at a temperature of 37°C; and c) at least one second layer comprises omeprazole or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof that is immediately soluble when the dosage form is placed in an aqueous medium, independent of pH, in an amount effective to raise the gastric pH of a patient to at least 3.5 after administration of one or more of the unit dosage forms, wherein the second layer surrounds the coating of the first layer and the pharmaceutical composition is used so that said administration is continued for a period of at least 14 days.SELECTED DRAWING: None |
