<PICT:1097921/C1/1> <PICT:1097921/C1/2> In the manufacture of flat glass by vertical drawing of a continuous sheet 1 of glass from the surface of a bath 2 of molten glass, each edge is guided in a slot 5 formed in an edge-retaining member 6 and the edges adjacent the members 6 are maintained at a substantially constant temperature, at which the edges remain securely in the bases of the slots 5, by regulating the heat exchange of the glass sheet below the members 6 by means of heaters and/or coolers. A thermo-electric couple 7 is provided, embedded in the bottom of each cup-shaped member 6 so that it lies closely adjacent the glass edge and the couple 7 is connected to a galvanometric regulator 10 and above a predetermined temperature, a valve 11 is opened and a cooler 9, through which air is blown, is brought into operation. Preferably, the glass just below the drawing position is heated by electrodes 13 and/or screens may be placed below the members 6. As an alternative to the coolers 9, heat may be applied immediately below the members 6 as by flames or heat radiating members. |
