1285129 Purification of zirconium ores TH GOLDSCHMIDT AG 9 July 1970 [9 July 1969] 33467/70 Heading C1A Zirconium ore is purified by passing a chlorinated hydrocarbon through the finely-divided ore at 400-700‹ C. to convert contaminating elements to their chlorides which are separated from the reaction mixture. The ore may be zirconium silicate or zirconium oxide (baddeleyite). The chlorinated hydrocarbon may be carbon tetrachloride or perchloroethylene, and may be introduced together with a carrier gas, such as air or nitrogen. When CCl 4 is used in air, approximately 1 to 10% by wt. CS 2 may be added to the CCl 4 . |
