1,100,101. Pipe couplings. INGLIS & MACINNES Ltd. 4 April, 1966 [5 April, 1965], No. 14292/65. Heading F2G. A coupling for connecting plain-ended pipes 18 comprises two rigid rings 2 having sleeve parts 3, a neoprene or rubber main sleeve 1 disposed between said flanges in the space bounded by said sleeve parts, tapered end parts 9 on said main sleeve being contacted by complementary inclined faces 10 on said rings, and bolts 4 extending through lugs 7 interconnecting said flanges whereby said flanges may be drawn together and the end parts 9 of the main sleeve urged inwardly against the pipes. In the embodiment shown, the bore of the main sleeve is provided with an annular recess 11 which is sub-divided by a central peripheral rib or flange 12 having a diameter less than said bore. Fluid passing through the assembled joint acts in the subdivided recess and further deforms the end sleeve portions 9 outwardly into tight sealing engagement with the inclined faces on the rings. In a modified embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the annular recess is of cylindrical form and is bounded at each end by oppositely-inclined deep grooves (16), fluid pressure again acting within the grooves to enhance sealing. The adjacent edges of the sleeve parts may be sinuously profiled at 13 as shown or castellated. |
