[Also in Division C3] A process for finishing textiles comprises applying to textiles an aqueous composition containing a copolymer which consists of a) 20 to 40% by weight of structural units derived from styrene, alpha-methylstyrene or vinyl toluene, b) 60 to 80% of units derived' from acrylic acid and c) 0 to 5% of units derived from acrylic acid methylolamide and drying the textile. The composition may also contain a curable aminoplast pre-condensate. Specified textiles are those made from natural and regenerated cellulose fibres, cellulose-polyester fibres or cellulose-polyamide fibres. After drying at e.g. 80‹ to 100‹C., the textile may be subjected to moist or heat fixing at 130‹ to 180‹C. In the examples, polyester/cotton skirt or coat poplin fabric is treated with a composition containing N, N'-dimethylol-4, 5- dihydroxy-2-imidazolidone, MgCl 2 -6H 2 O and a copolymer selected from acrylic acid/styrene, acrylic acid/alpha-methyl styrene, acrylic acid/vinyl toluene and acrylic acid/styrene/ N-methylolacrylamide copolymers and a polyamide tufted carpet is treated with a composition containing acrylic acid/styrene copolymer. |
