PURPOSE:To provide a sterilizing and deodorizing device which enables low noise operation of compact constitution and increases an amount of processed air, by a method wherein the one of an air flow passage is provided with an ozone generating means and a breathable catalyst layer for decomposing ozone, and air only passes the other of the air flow passage. CONSTITUTION:A sterilizing and deodorizing device 10 is provided with air flow passages 22 and 24 and a fan 18 situated in a box body 16 in which a suction port 12 and a discharge port 14 are formed. An inflow air amount regulating means 26 is mounted at the inlet of a bypass passage 24 and regulates a flow rate ratio between a sterilizing and deodorizing passage 22 and the bypass passage 24. An ultraviolet ray lamp 30 to irradiate with ultraviolet rays by which ozone is generated from oxygen in the air and a catalyst layer 34 for decomposition of ozone are situated, in order named, in a sterilizing and deodorizing passage 22. The catalyst layer 34 for decomposition of ozone is a device in which a catalyst having ozone decomposition performance is contained in a breathable structure 36. The ultraviolet ray lamp 30 is movable to a spot near a flow division spot. Further, an ultraviolet ray lamp 38 for sterilization is placed between a confluence of the sterilizing and deodorizing passage 22 to the bypass passage 24 and the fan 18.
