A metal ion elution unit comprising a plurality of electrodes (102, 103), a drive circuit (not shown) for applying a voltage between the electrodes, and a control circuit (not shown) for controlling the drive circuit to bring about a first current mode where the polarity of a voltage applied between the electrodes is inverted periodically and the current flowing through the electrodes has a first current level for a predetermined period after the polarity of the voltage applied between the electrodes is inverted, and then bring about a second current mode where the current flowing through the electrodes has a second current level different from the first current level.
