A friction disc element for a disc brake is formed of a plurality of interconnected annularly arranged segments 50 having radially extending ends 58 which are grooved to form cantilever-like projections 72 capable of fluxing inwards towards each other. The segments are connected by links 64 in circumferentially extending grooves attached to the segments close to keyways 60. The ends also contain slots 74 for members 76 having a cruciform or H cross-section which take shear loads. The segments may be solid, formed of two or three laminations or of a coreof BeO, graphite, boron nitride or boron carbide between outer plates and a retaining band. The element may be a rotor or stator, each segment having a key or keyway on its outer or inner edge. The element is mounted in an. aircraft wheel brake comprising a. plurality of interleaved rotors and stators actuated by a plurality of fluid motors protected against heat by insulating material. |
