An internal combustion engine comprises cylinders, either separate or arranged in rows, for each cylinder a rotary control element for controlling the interchange of gases arranged between the cylinder block (64) and the cylinder cover (53) and having an axis of rotation perpendicular the axes of the cylinders, and a control device (11) arranged between two trunnions (11a, 11b) extending in the direction of the axis of rotation, the said control device (11) being secured to one of the trunnions. Counter surfaces of the cylinder head having the same configuration as the control device and the trunnions surround the control device and the trunnion. Through each trunnion passes an axial gas channel (12, 13) arranged in the control device and opening on to the surface of a curved gas channel. Means are provided for transmitting the rotary movement of the crankshaft to the control device, which has a spherical shape. This internal combustion engine is a diesel engine having a fuel injection device the nozzle holder (6) of which is mounted in the ball of the rotary distributor (11).
