A hardenable composition comprises (i) a compound having on average more than one epoxy group per molecule, (ii) a hardener therefor, and (iii) a cyclic compound of the formula: <FORM:0966976/C3/1> where either (a) R1 and R5 together represent a divalent grouping and R2, R3, R4 and R6 each represent H or a monovalent substituent, or (b) R3 and R4 together with the C atoms to which they are attached represent a cyclic system and R1, R2, R5 and R6 each represen H or a monovalent substituent, R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 and R6 including at least 4 substituent halogen atoms, and one at least of (i) and (ii) containing at least one olefinic double bond. Other poly- and mono-epoxides (iv) may be added. Long lists of suitable compounds are given, of which the following are used in the examples:-(i) the polyglycidyl ether of bisphenol A, the diglycidyl ether of bis(p-hydroxy-m-allylphenyl) dimethyl methane, the epoxidized tall oil fatty acid ester of dihydrodicyclopentadienol (see Specification 943,924) and epoxidized tall oil fatty acid (Specification 943,924). (ii) maleic anhydride with or without benzyl dimethylamine, tetrahydrophthalic anhydride and triethylene tetramine; (iii) hexachlorocyclopentadiene, the di(m)ethyl ketal of tetrachlorocyclopentadienone, 1-ethyl-1, 2, 3, 4, 5-pentachlorocyclopenta-2, 4-diene, diethyl tetrachlorocyclopentadiene, 1,2,34, 5-pentachlorocyclopenta-2, 4-diene, and 2, 3-dimethylene-1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 7-hexachlorobicyclo [2,2,1] hept-5-ene; (iv) epoxidized dihydrodicyclopentadienol and o-allyl-phenyl glycidyl ether. Optional additives mentioned are asphalt, bitumen, glass fibres, mica, quartz, cellulose, kaolin, and silica. Specification 943,925 also is referred to. |
