Solid, fusible modified epoxy-novolac resins are the reaction products of liquid or semi-solid epoxy novolacs with a minor proportion, based on chemical equivalency, of a compound having the formula: <FORM:1016523/C3/1> wherein R and R1 are each -OH or -CO2H. The reaction may be performed at temperatures of 90-200 DEG C., at any pressure and preferably in the absence of oxygen such as under an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen methane, argon and helium. The reaction may be initiated by a tertiary amine. The products contain epoxy groups and are soluble in solvents such as 2 - butoxy ethanol and acetone. They may be cured by methyl - endomethylenetetrahydrophthalic anhydride in the presence of a -methylbenzyl-dimethylamine. |
