[Also in Divisions B8, F1 and F2] A device operable, e.g. as the joint of an artificial arm, comprises two rigid end pieces 1, 2 hinged together and having disposed therebetween at least one flexible pouch 7 supplied with fluid under pressure, the pouch or pouches being restrained from moving radially by connection to the end pieces 1, 2 at the hinge 3. Each pouch is preferably constructed of cord fabric, e.g. rayon, nylon, steel wire or glass fibre, coated and impregnated with a plastics or rubber material such as polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polyurethanes and polyamides. In an alternative construction. Fig. 3 (not shown), the pouches are integrally formed from, a length of a thermoplastics extrusion wherein the edges perpendicular to the hinge are sealed by heat bonding. The pouches may intercommunicate through holes 9, inlets and outlets 11 for the fluid then being provided in one or both of the end pieces. Alternatively, each pouch may be provided with an inlet/outlet 12. In a second embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown) two pouch assemblies are disposed on opposite sides of a hinge comprising a pair of plates hinged together along mutually contacting edges and to which the radially inner edges of the pouches are clamped. |
