The spigot end 7 of a pipe inserted into a socket 10 is spaced from the socket by a gasket of cellular synthetic rubber having an axially extending portion 14 and an internal flange 13 abutting the end of the spigot and the inner end of the socket and a gasket of dense synthetic rubber comprising an axially extending portion and an external flange abutting the end of the socket. The inner surface 5 of the gasket of dense rubber may be provided with inwardly protruding lips at the ends of the gasket and the outer surface of the gasket may be formed with lips 8, 9, of triangular profile. The flange 13 of the gasket of cellular rubber may have an internal V-shaped slit which is opened by fluid pressure and in which is fitted and secured by adhesive a ring of plastics material or metal, and the portion 14 thereof may be externally tapered and bulged adjacent the flange; also the gasket may consist of a hollow annular core of dense rubber around which a cellular rubber has been moulded.
